Q&A: My Accutane Experience

Hola! As promised, today's post will be a Q&A with questions contibuted by y'all! Feel free to email/comment if you have any more questions, I'm always willing to help!:) Let's get the ball rolling shall we?

1. How long were you on Accutane?

I started my first course at age 16 and was off the drug by 17. So, I was on Accutane for one year. It is important to note that my acne wasn't nearly that bad. I had 2-3 pimples at any given time with really bad breakouts during my period.

2. You mentioned hair loss as one of the side effects you experienced. Has the hair grown back?

Yes, it has. In fact, I noticed new hairs growing out even when I was on the drug. So even as I was losing strands of hair, new ones were in fact growing out.

3. Did your dermatologist prescribe you with any other oral medications/creams/lotions besides Accutane?

Yes, I was given antibiotics (which help stave off flare-ups). Alongside that, he gave me a cream to apply to active pimples during the day, a lotion to apply on pimples at night as well as a cream for acne scarring.

4. Can I expect clear skin in six weeks like you did if I went on Accutane?

Dearie, I'm no dermatologist so I can't say for sure. Accutane is always a drug used as a last resort so discuss with your dermatologist and seek his/her opinion about the skin's conditions before you make a rash decision. Even if your skin condition is bad, most dermatologists will actually prescribe you with other drugs before turning to Accutane. I struck gold with my dermatologist as he handed over the Accutane even when my condition did not necessitate it.

5. Your blog is all about natural skincare so why did you not choose to clear your skin through natural means? Aren't you being kind of hypocritical?

Woah, let's set some things straight shall we, buddy? This blog is not all about natural skincare. Yes, I do post a lot about DIY skincare tips but I've never once claimed that natural skincare is the only type I support and turn to. In fact, if you are a regular reader, you'll find that my posts cover reviews of skincare products as well. As for my clearing up my skin through Accutane, it was a personal decision which involved self-evaluation of my skin condition. The root problem of my acne was my skin type. I had oily skin and no product, drug-store or high-end ones, could effectively remove the oil without drying it out completely. Hence, everything I tried, whether natural or not, was not addressing the source.

And for the record, I do believe that natural skincare can heal acne, just that it work on some and not others (like me).

6. I am on Accutane now and I am experiencing hair loss. Should I trim it? HELP.

You aren't alone in this dearie, many Accutane-users experience this particular side-effect too:) Trimming your hair will certainly help decrease the amount of hair you lose as shorter hair will mean removing spli-ends and having an easier time washing it. Overall, that gives you healthier hair. However, if you want to eradicate hair loss, my advice would be to have a talk with your dermatologist and consider either stopping the course totally or decreasing the frequency at which you take the Accutane pills. Hope this helps:)

7. Have you ever regretted going on the drug?

No, not once. Why would I, when my skin condition has improved so drastically?

Alright, this marks the end of my Q&A post. I hope my answers are satisfactory!:D

Adios~
